George Washington men's basketball will return from an 11-day break for fall semester final exams to host high-scoring Big South Conference runner-up VMI at the Charles E. Smith Center on Saturday, Dec. 22.
The Keydets finished seventh in the Big South regular-season standings in 2011-12, but upset higher seeds Coastal Carolina and Winthrop to reach the conference title game for the third time in the past six seasons. VMI eventually dropped an 80-64 decision at top-seed and repeat Big South champion UNC Asheville, which went on to scare Syracuse as a No. 16 seed in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Duggar Baucom, who received a contract extension through the 2016-17 season this summer, employs an up-tempo system that saw the Keydets average 79.7 points, the eighth most in the nation, during the 2011-12 campaign. Entering his eighth season in Lexington, Va., Baucom helped VMI lead the nation in scoring for five consecutive seasons from 2006-07 to 2010-11.
Rising senior forward Stan Okoye averaged better than 17 points and seven rebounds last year and is one of three returning starters for VMI in 2012-13. The Keydets' strong finish propelled them to a 17-16 overall record in 2011-12, including a 13-2 mark at home in Cameron Hall, and a 1-14 mark in true road games.
After checking in and watching Coach Lonergan's daily game breakdown, fans can visit Facebook.com/GWsports and answer a trivia question for a chance to be entered in a grand prize giveaway at the conclusion of the non-conference schedule announcements. Prizes include an annual subscription to GW All-Access, two Colonials Club passes for the men's basketball team's home opener, or men's basketball endzone season tickets.
