The George Washington men's basketball team will close out the home portion of its 2012-13 non-conference slate against Sacred Heart at the Charles E. Smith Center on Sunday, Dec. 30.
The contest will mark the first-ever between the Colonials and the Northeast Conference's Pioneers, who posted a 14-18 overall record and 8-10 mark in NEC play in 2011-12.
After facing one of the nation's highest scoring teams in VMI in its previous game, GW will have to contain one of the top scoring players in the nation when Sacred Heart comes to the Smith Center.
SHU anticipates the return of its top five scorers from last season, including the nation's fourth leading scorer from 2011-12 in Shane Gibson. A 6-foot-2 redshirt senior guard, Gibson averaged 22.0 points on better than 50 percent shooting last season. The Pioneers also welcome double-digit scorer Justin Swidowski to the lineup after he pumped in 11.1 points per game in 2011-12.
Coach Dave Bike is in his 35th season at the helm at Sacred Heart, trailing only Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim for coaches with the longest tenure at one school.
