Fans, Friends and Family Bid Arrivederci to the Colonials
Aug. 9, 2012
Even though the GW men's basketball team doesn't embark on its 10-day tour of Italy for another week, its loyal supporters had a chance to say 'Arrivederci' to the players and coaching staff at Wednesday night's 'Arrivederci Colonials!' reception at the Embassy of Italy.
Some 100 guests spent the evening enjoying light fare and conversation with the Colonials' 13 players along with Director of Athletics and Recreation Patrick Nero, head coach Mike Lonergan and his coaching staff. GW's all-time leading scorer and 2012 Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Chris Monroe ('03), who has spent four of his 10 professional seasons playing in Italy, was also in attendance and was warmly recognized by Nero and the crowd. Dr. Diane Cline, an adjunct professor at GW who taught three lectures on Italian history and culture to the team over the past month, spoke to the crowd of the sights the team can expect along its tour.
Among the highlights of the event was a brief listing of the tour's itinerary - which will include stops in Rome, Florence and the Lake Como region, with four games against professional Italian teams, and visits to American military bases in Naples and Livorno to perform clinics and play teams consisting our country's finest. Coach Lonergan spoke of the team's summer workouts and expectations for the trip and upcoming season before having each of his 13 players introduce themselves to the crowd.
The night was capped by the members of the men's basketball team singing a rousing rendition of the GW Fight Song - Raise High the Buff and Blue - in Italian, much to the delight of the supporters in attendance:
