Men's Basketball Adds Four Recruits For 2007-08

WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington basketball coach Karl Hobbs has announced the addition of four recruits who have been admitted to the University this Fall. Guards Xavier Alexander, Miles Beatty, forward Jabari Edwards and center Joseph Katuka will play for the Colonials beginning in 2007.
Alexander is a 6-foot-6, 215-pound shooting guard from Forest Park, OK. He averaged 23 points, 10 rebounds as a senior at Midwest City High School under coach Rodney Dindy. The Bombers posted a 27-1 record during Alexander's senior season. The younger brother of former Charlotte standout, De'Angelo Alexander, Xavier shot 62.3 percent from the field as a senior. He was named MVP of the Mid-State Conference and was named District Player of the Year and a Super 5 selection as well as a member of the Faith Seven Team. Also garnered first team All-State, Conference MVP and Conference Player of the Year honors.
Beatty is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound point guard from Guttenberg, NJ. Playing on a high school team which was outstanding and very deep in talent, he averaged 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists as a senior at St. Anthony's High School under coach Bob Hurley. St. Anthony's posted a 28-1 record in 2006-07 and was ranked No. 7 in the USA Today Super 25 national poll and No. 3 in the East. The Friars advanced to the Non-Public B final where they lost to No. 2 St. Patrick (Elizabeth, NJ).
Edwards is a 6-foot-9, 200-pound power forward from Brooklyn, NY. He averaged 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks as a senior at St. Benedict's Prep under coaches Dan Hurley and Dennis DuBois. "Jabari is a high-energy player who runs the floor very well," DuBois said of Edwards. "He is an explosive shot-blocker who will definitely make an immediate impact on the defensive end and, with time, will become a terrifc all-around player for GW." As a sophomore, Edwards averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds to help Poly Prep on its NYSAIS class B state championship run. St. Benedict's (Newark, NJ) posted a 24-1 record in 2006-07 and was ranked No. 5 in the USA Today Super 25 national poll and No. 2 in the East.Its lone loss was to No. 2 St. Patrick (Elizabeth, NJ) in January. St. Benedict's also won two in-season tournaments.

Katuka is a 6-foot-10, 205-pound center from Zaria, Nigeria. He played his prep ball at Montverde Academy near Orlando, FL, where he averaged 12 points and 7 rebounds as a junior. Injuries limited his playing time as as senior last season. He was named to MaxPreps.com all-star team in 2007. Katuka also played for the Nigerian Junior National Team at the FIBA U19 World Championship in Novi Sad, Serbia in July.
GW (23-9, 11-5 A-10 in 2006-07) won the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament last March and earned its third straight NCAA Tournament berth in 2007.
