Men's Basketball Newcomers Join 1,500 GW Freshmen For First Annual Freshman Day of Service

Sept. 11, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington basketball freshmen Bryan Bynes, Tim Johnson, Lasan Kromah, David Pellom, Dwayne Smith and Daymon Warren all participated in the first annual Freshman Day of Service on Friday, Sept. 11. The six newcomers joined more than 1,500 GW freshmen and were some of the student-athletes who dedicated Sept. 11 to community service throughout the Washington, DC, area.

"Freshman Day of Service provides an opportunity for new students to enhance their GW education and contribute to the city that will become their home," said Freshman Service Coordinator Shannon Donahue. "The event focuses on `serving those who have served us' -- the many veterans who reside in the D.C. area as well as those who are currently serving overseas. Students will learn about the many service opportunities that GW and the community can provide."

"We wanted very much to take part in this meaningful outreach program," said GW head coach Karl Hobbs. "It affords our freshmen, five of whom are not from the DC area, the opportunity to pay tribute to those who have given of themselves for the good of our nation while becoming better acquainted with the GW community and the city."

The day of service began with an opening ceremony featuring Assistant Secretary of the Navy B.J. Penn, M.S. '80, at noon in University Yard. Volunteers then travelled to local service sites, including the Armed Forces Retirement Home, Anacostia Watershed Society and the Capital Area Foodbank, and volunteered from 1 - 4:30 p.m. Afterward, a cookout for volunteers was held in University Yard, followed by a 9/11 candlelight vigil.

Assistant Vice President for Student and Academic Support Services Helen Cannaday Saulny says the Freshman Day of Service was developed to build upon the strengths and interests of students already involved in service and to "spark a desire" for others to get involved in and around campus and the city. "The objective of the day is to provide students early on in their GW careers with an opportunity to engage in community service and related activities and embrace a proud University tradition of making a difference in our community," says Cannaday Saulny. "We hope that students will discover that combining their education, career aspirations and commitment to others is a hallmark of the GW experience."
