Men's Basketball Meets with Attorney General Eric Holder

Sept. 23, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington basketball team took the type of field trip on Monday that is unique to a program that calls Washington, DC, home. The Colonials players, coaches and staff met with U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Shortly after 2 p.m., the team departed from Charles E. Smith Center in a couple of vans and rode the few short blocks down Constitution Ave. and met with Holder at his offices in the U.S. Dept. of Justice building.

After the team entered through an extensive security screening, players took photographs of the portraits that adorned the hallways as they made their way to Holder's office. Holder shook the hand of each player and coach and then posed with members of the GW delegation for photographs.

Holder, a 1973 graduate of Columbia, played freshman basketball and was co-captain of his team. He spoke with the players and coaches about being prepared for life after college. He told them not to take living in DC for granted and emphasized the importance they have as role models and urged them to get involved in the community. He also encouraged them to plan for life after their basketball careers have concluded and take advantage of the education they are receiving at GW.

GW junior Travis King presented Holder with a GW polo shirt as a memento of the visit.
