WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball has added John Fitzpatrick as a special advisor to third-year Head Coach Mike Lonergan's staff for the 2013-14 season.

Fitzpatrick, who will assist the GW coaching staff with practices, scouting and recruiting, possesses 24 years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level, highlighted by successful stints as an assistant at Navy (1980-88), Fordham (1988-93), Ball State (1998-2000) and Houston (2000-04).

He helped those programs to 11 conference championships and eight postseason appearances (five NCAA Tournaments, three NITs), including Navy's 1986 NCAA Elite Eight led by eventual Naismith and Wooden National Player of the Year David Robinson, whom Fitzpatrick helped recruit from Osbourn Park High School in Manassas, Va. Fitzpatrick was most recently an assistant for a nationally ranked Virginia team in 2004-05 and at Wright State in 2005-06, and was also on staff as an assistant coach at Wichita State from 1993-96.

Over his more than two decades in collegiate coaching, Fitzpatrick has helped recruit five conference Newcomers of the Year, 14 student-athletes who gained NBA experience and 27 1,000-point scorers.
