Justin Mazzulla Signs with Men’s Basketball
The 6-foot-3 guard was the Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year in 2015-16
WASHINGTON -- Justin Mazzulla, a 6-foot-3 guard who was named Rhode Island’s Gatorade Player of the Year and the state tournament’s Most Outstanding Player last season, has signed a National Letter of Intent with the George Washington men’s basketball program.
As a junior, Mazzulla led Bishop Hendricken High School to a 26-3 record and the Open State Tournament Championship. He averaged 15.8 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.1 blocks per game while earning first team All-State honors in addition to being named the state tournament MOP.
“We are very excited about the signing of Justin and welcoming him to the GW family,” said interim head coach Maurice Joseph. “Justin possesses all the great qualities that we seek in our student-athletes both on and off the court and he will make an immediate impact on our program. His size and athleticism at the point guard position will complement our roster and his character will allow him to thrive at GW.”
Next season, Mazzulla will join a team poised to bring back 11 of 13 players from this year’s squad, including a talented core of six current freshmen.
“When I went on my visit there was a lot of positivity,” said Mazzulla. “The [student-athletes] opened my mind to the atmosphere and how good we can be in the future because of the large group of freshmen that are there now, who will be sophomores when I arrive. They have great chemistry, so I looked at it from the standpoint of the future, and how it’s going to be when I get there.”
In being named Rhode Island’s Gatorade Player of the Year, Mazzulla was also recognized for his off the court accomplishments. He has maintained a 3.50 GPA in the classroom while also volunteering for fundraising campaigns to benefit homeless shelters and food banks, in addition to donating his time as a youth basketball coach and referee.
“I really liked how everything is at my fingertips,” Mazzulla said of GW’s campus. “I think I’m going to study exercise science and there’s a really great program for that at GW. I just felt like everything I needed to be successful is there for me, and I liked the way the campus was set-up.”
Mazzulla, whose older brother, Joe, played basketball at West Virginia, has also spent the last four summers playing with the Boston Amateur Basketball Club, which won the 16-and-under AAU national title in 2015. As a sophomore at Bishop Hendricken, he earned second team All-State honors.
