Saturday's Game: After opening the season with two straight road wins, GW (2-0) begins a five-game homestand by hosting UMBC (0-2) in the home opener and fifth meeting at Smith Center.
GW's victory over Boston U. gave the Colonials back-to-back road victories for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
UMBC is the second straight opponents from the America East Conference this season.
UMBC defeated GW, 89-79, in the most recent meeting last Nov. 24 at Baltimore en route to the America East championship and first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
UMBC (0-2) is coming off a 69-66 loss to Loyola (MD) Wednesday at home despite shooting 49 percent (22-45) from the field and 54 percent (7-13) from three-point range.
UMBC is picked to finish 6th in the nine-team America East Conference in the league's preseason poll released Oct. 28.
GW is picked to finish 13th in the 14-team Atlantic 10 Conference in the league's Preseason Coaches' and Media Poll announced Oct. 22.
GW has won its last 20 straight home openers dating back to the 1989-90 season. The last time GW lost a home opener was on Nov. 26, 1988, to begin the infamous 1-27 season.
The Retrievers opened their season Nov. 15 with a 72-57 loss to Morgan St. at home.
A Closer Look at UMBC: A school of 12,300 students, UMBC is a member of the America East Conference located south of Baltimore less than 36 miles from the GW campus. In the America East in the preseason coaches' poll announced Oct. 28, the Retrievers were picked to finish 6th (tied with Hartford). The Retrievers come to Smith Center with an 0-2 record that includes losses to Morgan State (72-57) and Loyola (MD) (69-66) last Wednesday at home. UMBC sophomore Chauncey Gilliam leads the Retrievers with 16.5 points and freshman Adrian Satchel has a team-best 6.5 rebounds a game. Gilliam had a 22-point effort in the loss to Loyola. Of the current Retrievers who appeared in last year's game against the Colonials, Justin Fry (12 pts.) and Matt Spadafora (7 pts., 4 assists) had the top scoring efforts. As a team, the 2009-10 Retrievers are shooting 39 percent from the field and 29 percent from 3-point range. UMBC has a -0.5 turnover margin and is getting outrebounded by nearly six caroms a game through its first two games.
