A Closer Look at UMBC: A school of 12,300 students, UMBC is a member of the America East Conference located south of Baltimore less than 36 miles from the GW campus. The Retrievers have been picked to finish fourth in the America East in the preseason coaches' poll announced Oct. 24. The Retrievers are off to a 3-1 start that includes wins over Quinnipiac (76-71) and at Columbia (66-52) last Saturday in New York. UMBC's only loss came at Morgan State, 67-60. Senior Darryl Proctor leads the Retrievers with 20 points and nine rebounds a game. He had a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double against the Colonials in last year's meeting. Preseason All-Conference selection Jay Greene runs the Retrievers' offense with 7.5 assists and 15 points per game. Greene has hit nearly half of his three-point attempts (10-of-21). As a team, the Retrievers are shooting 48 percent from the field and 38 percent from 3-point range. UMBC has a +3 turnover margin but a -0.2 rebounding margin through their first four games.
Next Game: GW has a week to prepare for a Dec. 7 date with Maryland in the 14th Annual BB&T Classic at Verizon Center. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m. (EST) and will be telecast live on MASN and broadcast live on Federal News Radio 1500 AM, 820 AM as well as www.GWsports.com.
