Watanabe Named A-10 Co-Player of the Week
The senior averaged 21.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in two wins last week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After leading the GW men's basketball team to wins over Morgan State and Temple last week, senior guard Yuta Watanabe has been named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. Watanabe shares the honor with Justin Tillman of VCU.
Watanabe did it all for GW, stuffing the stat sheet with averages of 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 blocks. On Wednesday vs. Morgan State, he became the 49th member of GW's 1,000-point club with his first bucket of the game en route to a career-high 26 points.
The native of Kagawa, Japan, got his 26 on an efficient 16 shots, including 3-of-7 from three-point range, but was perhaps even more impressive on the defensive end. He totaled a game- and career-high five steals in the contest to go along with three blocks.
On Sunday against Temple, Watanabe again turned in a complete performance with 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals to help the Colonials take a 71-67 win.
For the week, Watanabe shot .577 (15-26) from the floor and .455 (5-11) from three-point range. This is his first Player of the Week honor.
