WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington men's basketball is ranked in the AP Top 25 Poll for the first time since the week of Feb. 16, 1998 when the Colonials were 24th. GW received 423 votes and is the No. 21-ranked team in the lastest AP poll released Monday. GW rose as high as 17th during the 1997-98 season. All-time, it marks the 45th appearance for GW in the AP poll. GW also received 80 votes and is ranked No. 25 in the USA Today/Coaches Top 25 poll also released Monday.
GW shot into the Top 25 after defeating a pair of nationally ranked teams on consecutive days in the BB&T Classic at Washington's MCI Center. The Colonials defeated #11/9 Michigan State, 96-83, on Saturday and then dispatched #12/12 Maryland, 101-92, in the championship Sunday.
Both MSU (Tom Izzo) and UM (Gary Williams) are coached by men who have won national championships within the last five years.
