Guzman has been ranked as high as eigth in the Colombian Amateur rankings and he finished second at the 2000 Colombian Amateur. In that event he defeated Camillo Villegas in the semi-finals. Villegas was the #2 ranked player in all of Division I in 2002-03 while at the University of Florida. Guzman has represented his country several times in international competition. In 2001, he finished 24th at the World Team Junior in Japan and finished 27th at the Junior Team Invitational in Argentina.

Guzman got his career off to a steady start, shooting 74-74 at the US Naval Academy Invitational. He then posted 73-76-72 at the James Madison University Invitational and added a 13th place finish at the Rehoboth Beach Fall Invitational shooting 80-72 for a 152 total. In the spring of 2003, Guzman was named Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week after shooting 145 and placing 11th at the Navy Spring Invitational. He became the sixth Colonial to be named to the Atlantic 10 Conference All-Tournament team after he shot 75-75-74 and finished fifth at the A-10 Championship. In the fall of 2003 Federico placed third at the Rehoboth Beach Fall Invitational, shooting 72-74. In the spring of 2004 Federico was GW's low finisher in high winds during their spring break match in Bermuda with 78 and in the second round of the Princeton Invitational shooting 74. Federico is an International Affairs Major and big soccer fan. His brother Sergio is a freshman at GW.
