Johnson was recruited by Allen after he graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in 2002 but decided to take an extra year at the International At GW:
Emerged as a regular in the line-up in the spring of his freshman year. His first start came at the William & Mary Invitational where he shot 79-77 and was named Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week. He ended the spring on a high note, finishing as low Colonial in the rain-plagued Atlantic 10 Championship and leading GW to its best ever finish, second. The previous week, he birdied the last three holes in a downpour to shoot 68 and win the Rhode Island-Newport Invitational. He earned his second Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for his effort. During his sophomore year Johnson garnered his second career top five finish when he finished second at the Joe Agee Invitational, shooting 73-68-72 and helping the team to the title. His final round 70 (to go with an opening round 76) helped GW secure a runner up finish at the Old Dominion/SeaScape Invitational.
Was named co-captain as a junior. He finished 17th to lead the Colonials at the Penn/Big 5 Invitational, shooting 76-76 and ninth at the Princeton Invitational with 74-73. He ended the season with GW lowest scoring average (of players who played more than 12 rounds) at 76.35. As a senior, he placed fifth at the 2007 Rehoboth Beach Invitational shooting 76-70
Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head Island, SC to improve his game and get a head start on school. The year paid off as Johnson won the IJGT Clemson Invitational with 69-73 and signed with GW in April of 2003. He garnered five Top-10 finishes and five more top 20s fifteen IJGT events in 2003-04, including a third at the Links at Shirley with 153 and sixth place finishes at the Sandpiper and Westfields stops on the tour. Johnson finished 15th and 16th respectively at the 2001 and 2002 Massachusetts State Juniors. He won the 2002 New England region qualifier for the US Junior Amateur shooting 69-71 to earn a trip to the US Junior at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Johnson also has experience in AJGA and FCWT events. He qualified for his second USGA event when he birdied the first playoff hole to advance to the U.S. Amateur Public Links.
