First-Year Head Coach Brings Cerebral Approach to Colonials' Nine-Man Roster

GW alumnus and former golf student-athlete Eddie Newland ('09) is in his second season as assistant coach on Coach Scheinost's staff. He is also attending GW's Graduate School of Business working toward an MBA with a concentration in finance.

Coach Newland played four seasons for the Colonials, posting a 77.4 scoring average and earning Atlantic 10 Conference Performer of the Week honors in March 2008 before receiving his bachelor's degree in psychology in May 2009.

During his college years, Coach Newland worked as a camp counselor at the Stanford University Golf Camp and spent a summer as a PGA intern at Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia. Between graduation and his assistant role to GW, Coach Newland returned home to the San Francisco Bay Area where he worked as an Assistant PGA Professional at Mira Vista Country Club. In addition to his regular duties, which included the junior program and fitness operations, Coach Newland competed in regional PGA of America events. His top finish was a tie for second at the Northern California Club Professional Championship.

After leaving the golf business, Coach Newland transitioned to a role as Operations Manager at CaptainU - a web-based clearinghouse matching aspiring college athletes with coaches and programs at all NCAA competitive levels. Starting as one of the first employees, he helped develop CaptainU's college coach software, growing its user base from scratch to over 3,000 registered NCAA coaches.
