Reigning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year Terry Shaffer is in his fifth year as head coach of the George Washington University golf program.
In 2012 Shaffer guided his sixth-seeded team to its first-ever A-10 Championship, setting a new 36-hole team record with a two-round score of 8-under par 568. Shaffer's squad unseated six-time defending champion Charlotte by two strokes, while senior Andres Pumariega was named to the A-10 All-Conference and Academic All-Conference teams with a second-place finish.
Under Shaffer's guidance the 2012 Colonials earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006, where the team tied for 13th place at the Greensboro Regional. He also saw Pumariega earn a spot on the PING Division I All-Region Team, while Pumariega and classmate Martin Liu were named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars.
Additionally, in the fall of 2011, Shaffer saw freshman Jack Persons set new school 36- and 54-hole scoring records with scores of 138 and 207, respectively, at the Old Dominion/Outerbanks Collegiate.
A GW alumnus and former member of the golf team, Shaffer was a four-year letterwinner for the Colonials (1976-79) and was named the team MVP as a senior in 1979. Shaffer graduated from GW in 1979 with a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in finance.
"GW has done a terrific job in building this golf program and making it successful," Shaffer said upon his hiring. "This year's program will be no different as it continues to become one of the best programs in the Atlantic 10 and the NCAA. Make no mistake about it, with the talent this team has, this year and subsequent years look very bright. We have great plans for the future. I have a heart-felt passion to help our golfers succeed in all of their endeavors both on, and off, the course."
A 1979 graduate of GW, Shaffer returns to his alma mater with 29-plus years of experience in the golf industry. His resume includes more than 16 years as a PGA Head Golf Professional, four years as the head golf coach at a Division I university (Mount St. Mary's), and working with thousands of students helping to promote and develop their golf skills. Shaffer has worked at Bethesda Country Club, Prospect Bay C.C., and has been with Atlantic Golf for the past eight years.
"Terry is a former member of the GW golf team and comes to us with a broad range of coaching and teaching experiences," said GW Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Mary Jo Warner. "I am confident that our team will succeed under his direction."
A member of the PGA of America, Shaffer and his wife, Susan, reside with their three children in Charlotte Hall, MD.
