Tyler was the runner-up in the 2002 Michigan High School Championship shooting 72-77 falling to only Michigan State's Matt Harmon. Tyler also played exceptionally well on the Power-Built Tour. In 2004 Jack qualified for the Michigan Amateur and finished 22nd in a field that included the top amateurs and club professionals in the state.
Jack had an impressive showing in his first college event carding a first-round 69 en route to a 36-hole 143 and a tie for tenth place among 74 individuals. In his second collegiate event Tyler shot an even-par 213 (73-68-72) to tie for ninth in the James Madison Invitational for which he was named Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week. He also shot 77-75 at the Old Dominion/SeaScape Invitational. Known as Red Bull for his fiery personality, Tyler has shown the ability to go low. This spring Jack played on of the most eventful rounds in GW history. Tyler put seven birdies and an eagle on the board on the way to shooting 70 in the first round of the Princeton Invitational. His 76 in the second round would place him seventh overall. His 76 in tough conditions at the Rehoboth Beach Spring Invitational placed him 11th.
