MIAMI -- The George Washington golf team took head-to-head victories over local foe George Mason and Florida Atlantic to secure a third-place finish in the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championships at Weston Hills Country Club.

Opening play on Monday morning against the Patriots, GW took a 3.5 - 2.5 victory as Logan Lowe, Yoo Jin Kim and Vince Palazzolo won their matches, and Jack Porcelli halved his. Porcelli helped enable the victory by overcoming a two-down deficit with two to play, winning 17 and 18 to secure the crucial half point.

Facing a fellow 2015-16 Atlantic 10 All-Conference team honoree in Eric Edwards, Lowe took a hard fought 3 & 1 victory, while Kim made six birdies to easily defeat Ellis Messian 5 & 4, and Palazzolo took a 3 & 2 win over Wonsuk Rhee.

The Colonials fell to eventual champion Dayton in round two, 5-1, setting up a third-place match with FAU which was added to balance out the eight-team field.

After Porcelli and Kim took victories in their matches, the Colonials trailed 3-2 with Cichan on the course for the sixth and final match, which was all square after 16 holes. The redshirt junior came through in the clutch, birdieing 17 to win the hole before making par on 18 to win two-up and also provide a tiebreaker in total holes won that gave GW the victory.

“I’m extremely happy with how we played,” said head coach Chuck Scheinost. “I was really impressed by Yoo Jin -- after struggling a bit in the fall, he really gained some confidence as he played throughout the week and led the team in birdies. All the guys played well against Mason, and we played well against Dayton, but they played extremely well. Overall, I’m very proud of how we competed and performed all week.”

Cichan, who steadily knocked down a four-foot putt on 18 knowing he needed it for a GW victory over FAU, believes the Colonials can use the finish as a springboard to a successful remainder of the spring season.

“This event gave us the confidence that we can play with any team in the A-10 and that our goal of winning the A-10 Championship is within reach,” said Cichan. “We’re excited to transition to our first stroke play event in a couple of weeks where we will keep the momentum going.”

GW returns to tournament play March 13-14 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the Appalachian State Bash at the Beach.
