GW Golf Finishes Fifth at Harmony Preserve Intercollegiate

HARMONY, Fla. – The George Washington golf team shot a 19-over par 307 for the second consecutive round to combine for a three-day score of 56-over 920 at the Harmony Preserve Intercollegiate on Wednesday.

The Colonials finished fifth at the 54-hole event at the par-72, 7,208-yard Harmony Golf Preserve, besting Villanova’s (58-over 922) sixth-place finish by two strokes.

Austin Peay claimed first with a combined 11-over 875 after carding a 9-over 297 on Wednesday. Atlantic 10 newcomer and tournament host VCU finished second with a 16-over 880, Florida Atlantic took third with a 23-over 887 and Florida Gulf Coast finished fourth with a 32-over 896. FAU’s Richard Donegan took home medalist honors in the 36-player field with a total score of 1-under 215.

Sophomore Jack Persons fired an even-par 72 for the second consecutive day to jump 13 spots from Tuesday and finish in a four-way tie for 10th with a combined 7-over 223. Freshman Steve Piela finished 19th with an 11-over 227 after shooting a 6-over 78 in the final round.

Rookie Howard Hickey, who shot a 13-over 85 on Wednesday, and junior Graham Lawyer, who carded a 7-over 79, tied for 31st place with combined three-day scores of 26-over 242.
