NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - GW golf recorded its third-lowest team total of the season in the opening round and is in 14th place after completing two rounds at Appalachian State's Bash at the Beach on Monday.

GW fired a 16-over-par 300 as a team over the opening 18 holes on The Surf Club's par-71 layout, a total bettered only by GW's rounds of 285 and 298 at the ODU/Outer Banks Intercollegiate in October. Freshman Michael Heda led the way in the opening round with a 1-under 70, the third-lowest total for a GW golfer this season.

The Colonials followed up with a 23-over 307 in the second round and are in 12th place at 39-over 607, 45 shots back of leader Radford's 6-under 562. Gardner-Webb's Blake Maum holds the individual lead at 7-under 135.

Junior Jack Persons carded a season-low even-par 71 in the second round and leads GW in an eight-way tie for 30th place in the 95-player field at 4-over 146 (71-75). Heda is one shot back and tied for 38th at 5-over 147 (70-77).

Senior Benton Kircher (78-79--157), sophomore Steve Piela (77-81--158) and freshman Lucas Farmer (82-80--162) are 80th, 82nd and 85th, respectively, to complete the Colonials' five-man team.

Individually, senior Graham Lawyer (78-78--156), and sophomores Michael Helton (79-80--159) and Carlos Pena (89-79--168) are tied for 77th, 83rd and 91st, respectively.
