Golf Places Second at Rain-Shortened GW Invitational
Luthra's 73 Ties for First Among 130 Individuals
April 3, 2005
ISSUE, MD -- GW combined to shoot a team total 305 to tie for second place in the rain-shortened GW Golf Invitational Sunday at the par-72, 6,761-yard Swan Point Country Club in Issue, MD. After several attempts at playing the first round on Saturday, play was stopped by repeated downpours and the tournament was reduced to an 18-hole tournament on Sunday.
Villanova paced the 26-team field with a 15-over-par 303 and the Wildcats' Jonathan Hewett won individual honors by virtue of a tie-breaking formula that gave him the victory over three other individuals with 73s. Hewett, his Villanova teammate, Colin Mahon, George Washington's Raman Luthra (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) and Siena's Robby Bigley all carded 73s to tie for first place but Hewett took top honors after his scores on the lowest handicapped holes were lower than the other three players' scores on those holes.
The defending tournament champion Colonials were led by Luthra's 73 (38-35) and junior Brian Carroll (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) who carded a two-over-par 74 (38-36). Carroll tied IUPUI's Derek Bolling for fifth place out of 130 golfers.
GW's `B' team, led by Brandon Muir (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro/ULM) and Federico Guzman (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Nueva Granada) who each shot a 78, tied Bucknell and Temple for sixth place in the team standings.
GW's next competition takes place April 8-9 at the 36-hole Princeton Invitational in Princeton, NJ.
