ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The GW golf team shot a combined 623 to finish in a three-way tie for ninth eighth at the Navy Spring Invitational, Saturday and Sunday, at the par-71, 6,611-yard Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, MD. The tournament was played in difficult weather conditions that included intermittent rain Saturday and strong wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour on Sunday.
Johnson & Wales won the 23-team tournament with a 35-over par 603 score. Binghamton's Joe Kunz won the 36-hole event with a one-over-par 143 (71-72) followed by Towson's Billy Wingerd who carded a 144 (69-75).
GW sophomore Brian Carroll (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) continued his outstanding play this spring by shooting a 73-77 for an eight-over 150, good for sixth out of 115 individuals. Carroll, who tied for 56th place in this event last year, recorded three birdies and an eagle in Saturday's first round. Teammates Dan Mirabella (Ann Arbor, MI/Saline) and Raman Luthra (East Amherst, NY/Nichols) both shot a 158 to tie for 47th place. Colonials senior Charles Taylor (St. Lambert, Quebec/Gov. Dummer) was a stroke behind Mirabella and Luthra at 159 (79-80).
