ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The GW golf team shot a combined 599 to place eighth in the Navy Spring Invitational, Saturday and Sunday, at the par-70, 6,361-yard Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, MD.
The host Midshipmen won the tournament with a total 581. Both Navy and first-round leader Johnson & Wales finished the tournament with a 21-over par 581 score. In the case of a tie, tournament policy requires a playoff to break the tie, however Johnson & Wales left the golf course prior to the end of the tournament due to an early flight back to Miami. Because the playoff could not take place, the tie was broken by virtue of a match of cards by the fifth man on the final day of play. Rob Lenkey of Johnson & Wales produced an 11-over par 81, while Navy's Rocky Novellino (Bayville, N.J.) turned in a 77 to give the Mids the victory. The 23-team tournament was won by Navy's Brian Crum with a one-under-par 139 (70-69) followed by teammate Billy Hurley who carded a 140 (73-67).
GW freshman Federico Guzman (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Nueva Granada) was the low Colonial with a 145 which included an even-par 70 in Saturday's first round. Guzman tied for 11th out of 115 individuals. Colonials senior Michael Ball (Potomac, MD/Churchill) tied for 22nd with a 149 (72-77).
Colonials' individual scores (115 total golfers):
T-11th Federico Guzman 70-75 - 145
T-22nd Michael Ball 72-77 - 149
T-48th Dan Mirabella 72-82 - 154
T-56th Andrew Gallo 76-80 - 156
T-56th Brian Carroll 79-77 - 156
