Hickey Paces GW Golf at Grub Mart Intercollegiate
Freshman Howard Hickey Ties for Seventh, Colonials Tie for Ninth at 54-Hole Event

GLENCOE, Ala. – The George Washington golf team tied for ninth place with a 54-hole score of 74-over par 938 at the two-day Grub Mart Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
The Colonials shot a team total of 13-over 309 – their lowest of the event – through the final 18 holes to tie with Northern Kentucky at the par-72, 6,886-yard Silver Lakes Golf Course. Freshman Howard Hickey led the Buff and Blue with an 8-over 224 after carding a 4-over 76 on Tuesday to finish in a three-way tie for seventh place.
Host Jacksonville State’s ‘A’ team claimed the team title with a three-round 5-over 869, and the Gamecocks’ Tomasz Anderson paced the 56-player field with a combined score of 7-under 209. Columbus State finished second with a team total of 22-over 886, followed by North Alabama in third with a 30-over 894, Armstrong Atlantic in fourth with a 34-over 898 and Lipscomb in fifth with a 52-over 916. Morehead State finished sixth with a 54-over 918, Eastern Kentucky finished seventh with a 60-over 924 and Jacksonville State’s ‘B’ team finished eighth with a 70-over 934.
Following Hickey for GW was sophomore Jack Persons, who shot his best round on Tuesday with a 3-over 75 to combine for a three-round score of 18-over 234 and finish in a three-way tie for 38th. Freshman Steve Piela carded a 21-over 237 after shooting a 9-over 81 in the final round to tie for 46th place. Classmate Carlos Pena shot his best round on Tuesday with a 7-over 79 to finish 52nd with a score of 29-over 245, and sophomore Jonathan Dresnick followed by two strokes with a total score of 31-over 247 after shooting his lowest round with a 7-over 79 to finish 53rd.
The Colonials travel to nearby Annapolis, Md. on Saturday, April 20 for the two-day Navy Spring Invitational, which will serve as GW’s final event of the season before the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championships.
