Blankvoort's 66 Wins Rehoboth Beach Invitational

April 15, 2002

REHOBOTH BEACH, DE - GW's Thomas Blankvoort (Curacao, Netherlands Antilles) tied a 45-year-old school record with a six-under-par 66 in the morning round of the Rehoboth Beach Invitational Monday at the par-72, 6,615-yard Kings Creek Country Club on the Delaware shore. Blankvoort won the tournament by three strokes with a 36-hole 141 as GW placed sixth in the 14-team field.

Rutgers totalled a 602 (308-294) to win the tournament just one stroke ahead of Iona College (303-300-603). American and Columbia tied for fourth with 607 each. Rutgers' Brent Pittman was three strokes off Blankvoort's pace with three players totalling 145s to tie for third.

Blankvoort's 66 equalled the lowest round ever by a Colonial. Jay Randolph ('56) carded a 66 at the 1957 Southern Conference Championship at the Danville (VA) Country Club.

Colonials' junior Brad Friedlander (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) had one of his better tournaments of the season with a 155 (76-79) to tie for 27th place.

GW individual scores (75 total players):
1st Thomas Blankvoort 66-75 - 141
T-27th Brad Friedlander 76-79 - 155
T-43rd Charles Taylor 76-84 - 160
T-47th Bryan Derdenger 82-79 - 161
T-54th Michael Ball 85-78 - 163

Next up for the Colonials is the 2002 Verizon Atlantic 10 Championship April 19-21, at Penn National Golf Club in Mt. Alto, PA.
