CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The George Washington golf team and senior Martin Liu are in first place after Friday's opening round of the 34th annual Atlantic 10 Golf Championship at the par-72, 7055-yard Heron Bay Golf Club.

Liu sits in a tie for first place with Rhode Island's Andrew Fiorenzano after carding a 3-under par 69 to pace the Colonials. GW leads the 11-team field with a combined score of 4-under 284, one shot better than second-place Richmond.

"I am extremely happy with how everyone played today, but I also think we can go even lower," said head coach Terry Shaffer ('79). "We are excited to get back out there tomorrow morning."

Six-time defending champion Charlotte is in third with a 2-under 286, followed by fourth-place Xavier at 2-over 290 and fifth-place URI with a 3-over 291.

Liu made a team-high six birdies, including three straight on Nos. 12-14, against only three bogeys. Senior Brandon Rukin opened the day's action with back-to-back birdies and tallied five total through the first round to finish at 1-under 71 where he is tied for sixth out of 55 total golfers.  Classmate Andres Pumariega and freshman Jack Persons are tied for 11th with even-par rounds of 72. Senior Taylor Fuqua is tied for 38th after shooing a 4-over 76.
