ORLANDO, FL -- The George Washington golf team placed 23rd in the 27-team NCAA East Regional with a 54-hole total 922, Thursday-Saturday, at the par-72, 7,179-yard Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando, FL. The Colonials needed to finish in the top 10 to advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Finals in Oregon.
GW senior Brian Carroll (Crystal Lake, IL) shot a seven-over-par 223 (73-77-73) to tie for 44th place out of 144 golfers, 12 strokes off the pace. Carroll recorded 10 birdies and was four-under on the par-5 holes for the tournament.
Wake Forest won the 27-team Regional with a 54-hole total 864, one stroke ahead of runner-up Georgia. UCLA's Kevin Chappell took individual medalist honors with a 5-under 211, defeating three other individuals by a stroke.
GW junior Raman Luthra (East Amherst, NY) tied teammate Andrew Gallo (Toronto, Ontario) as the second-lowest Colonials, each with a 232 to tie for 103rd place.
GW senior Dan Mirabella (Ann Arbor, MI), playing in his final collegiate tournament, fired a 235 (79-76-80) to tie for 116th place.
It marked the first time in 60 years that GW had qualified as a team for NCAA Tournament play. GW last qualified for the 1946 NCAA Tournament when it finished 12th at Princeton.
