Golf Opens Season With 9th-Place Showing at Navy Fall Invitational
Sept. 9, 2007 ANNAPOLIS, MD -- GW sophomore Tyler Wendelken (Sammamish, WA) carded a 145 (75-70) to tie for seventh, eight strokes off the pace, in the season-opening Navy Fall Invitational Saturday and Sunday at Annapolis, MD. Wendelken, who was competing for GW's B team, fired a one-under-par 70 on Sunday to lead the squad to a 10th-place finish in the 17-team field. The Colonials' A team was led by Juan Pablo Zuluaga's (Bogota, Colombia) seven-over-par 149 (80-69) which placed him in a six-way tie for 17th place. "It bodes well for our depth that we had both our A and B teams place so high this early in the season," GW coach Scott Allen said. The Colonials' A squad combined to shoot a 44-over-par 612 (314-298) at the par-71, 6,528-yard Naval Academy Golf Course. The GW B team was one stroke back at 613 (317-296). North Carolina State won the tournament with an 2-under-par 566 (279-287) to run away from the field. The host Midshipmen of Navy finished second, a whopping 23 strokes behind the Wolfpack. NC State placed six of the top seven individuals led by medalist Hertzog Landman's five-under 137 (68-69). The tournament marked the collegiate debut for a pair of GW freshmen. Brendan Barrack (Toronto, Canada) tied for 31st with a 152 (76-76) while Max Hamm (Wiesbaden, Germany) tied for 80th after carding a 167 (84-83).
