Golf Ties For Second at Navy Fall Invitational

Sept. 12, 2005

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- GW's Brian Carroll (Crystal Lake, IL) carded a 145 (71-74) to tie for eighth, just two strokes off the pace, in the Navy Fall Invitational Saturday and Sunday at Annapolis, MD. As a team, GW tied Towson University for second with a team total 595 (295-300) at the par-71, 6,611-yard Naval Academy Golf Course.

George Mason ran away with the team title by 17 strokes with a score of 578 and Saint Joseph's Colin Corrigan was the individual medalist after winning an 11-hole playoff over Winthrop's Steve Alminas and Siena's Bryan Bigley. All three players finished with a one-over-par 143. GW's `B' team tied for fourth with Siena after shooting a 597 (305-292).

The second-place tie marked GW's best finish in the Navy Fall Invitational since 1994. It also marked the seventh straight tournament that GW placed either first or second in the final team standings dating back to last season.

The strength of the field was formidable considering both Towson and Loyola qualified for the NCAA Division I men's golf championship last year.

GW sophomore Tim Johnson (Marblehead, MA) tied with teammate Dan Mirabella (Ann Arbor, MI) for 10th place both with 146. Freshman Jake McGuigan (Clones, Ireland) made an impressive collegiate debut carding a six-over-par 148.

GW individual scores (81 total players):
T-8h Brian Carroll 71-74 -- 145
T-10th Tim Johnson 75-71 -- 146
T-10th Dan Mirabella 74-72 -- 146
