GW Golf in 12th Place Through Day One of Adams Cup of Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. – The George Washington golf team opened 2012 fall action on Monday with two rounds of competition at the par-70, 6,948-yard Newport Country Club. The Colonials currently sit in 12th place with a combined score of 74-over 634, while sophomore Jack Persons paces the squad in a tie for 15th with a two-round score of 15-over 155. UCF leads the 12-team field with a combined 36-hole score of 15-over 575 and the Knights’ Ricardo Gouveia and Yale’s Sam Bernstein are tied for medalist honors with an even-par score of 140. The Bulldogs are currently in second place, one stroke behind UCF with a two-round score of 16-over 576, and Villanova follows in third with a combined score of 33-over 593. GW freshman Steve Piela made his first collegiate appearance on the links on Monday and is currently tied for 50th out of 70 golfers with a two-round score of 17-over 157. Junior Graham Lawyer shot a 19-over 159 on Monday to sit in a tie for 60th place and sophomore Jonathan Dresnick is in 62nd with a 23-over 163 through two rounds. The Colonials conclude the final 18 holes of play in the Adams Cup of Newport on Tuesday morning at the par-71, 6,675-yard Carnegie Abbey Golf Club.
