Rookies Farmer, Heda Pace GW Golf on Day 1 of VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - Freshmen Lucas Farmer and Michael Heda both carded consecutive rounds in the 70s to lead GW golf on the first day of the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club on Monday.

The Colonials made their debut at the event with 36 holes on Hermitage Country Club's par-72, 6,955-yard Manakin Course on Monday.

Farmer, playing as part of GW's five-man team, followed up an opening round 6-over-par 78 with an even-par 72 for a two-round 6-over 150 to sit in a tie for 39th place out of 77 golfers. Farmer's 72 is his third round of par-or-better in his opening five rounds of collegiate golf after starting 71-72 at the Adams Cup last week.

Heda, competing as an individual at the event, made four birdies en route to a 2-over 74 in his debut collegiate round, followed by a 7-over 79 in the second round and is tied for 51st at 9-over 153. Heda tied for 18th in field with six birdies on Monday.

GW is in 12th place with a 36-hole team total of 55-over 631. Virginia Tech holds a two-shot lead over Iowa State with a 9-under team total of 567, and the Hokies' Scott Vincent is the individual leader at 7-under 137.

Junior Jack Persons and sophomore Steve Piela are both tied for 68th at 16-over 160. Persons rebounded from an opening 14-over 86 with a 2-over 74 in Round 2, aided by three front-side birdies after starting on Hole 8. Piela carded identical rounds of 8-over 80.

Senior Graham Lawyer is in 75th place at 21-over 165 (81-84), and sophomore Carlos Pena is in 76th place at 23-over 167 (82-85).

Tuesday's final round begins with a shotgun start on the back nine at 8:45 a.m.
