GW Golf's Heda Matches Rookie Low With 68 at VCU Shootout
Freshman Michael Heda Ties for 29th at First Collegiate Tournament

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - GW golf's Michael Heda matched the lowest-ever round by a Colonials' freshman with a 4-under-par 68 to climb into a tie for 29th place at the VCU Shootout on Tuesday.
Heda, who competed as an individual at the Shootout, improved 22 spots in the 77-golfer field with his 68 and finished with a three-round total of 5-over 221 (74-79-68) on Hermitage Country Club's par-72, 6,955-yard layout. Heda took advantage of Hermitage's par 4s, tying for 10th in the field by going 1-under on the par 4s for the tournament. He also tied for seventh in the field with 12 total birdies, including six during Tuesday's 68.
Heda is the 13th Colonials' golfer to card a 68, which ties as the 12th-best single-round total in program history. It also matches former Colonials Tim Johnson (4/30/05), Jack Tyler (9/20/03) and teammate Jack Persons (10/23/11) as the lowest round recorded by a GW rookie.
GW posted its best team total of the young season on Tuesday with a 21-over 309, led by 3-over 75s from freshman Lucas Farmer and sophomore Steve Piela. Farmer made two birdies and five bogeys en route to Tuesday's 75 and tied for 44th at 9-over 225 (78-72-75), while Piela's best round of the tournament left him in 64th at 19-over 235 (80-80-75).
The Colonials finished in 12th place overall at 76-over 940 (321-310-309). Virginia Tech distanced itself from the field with a 14-under 274 on Tuesday and won the team title by 22 strokes over runner-up Iowa State at 23-under 841 (287-280-274). Hokies junior Scott Vincent captured medalist honors for the second straight tournament with a 10-under 206 (60-68-69).
Persons shot an 8-over 80 on Tuesday and finished in 71st at 24-over 240 (86-74-80). Senior Graham Lawyer closed with a 7-over 79 and placed 74th at 28-over 244 (81-84-79). Sophomore Carlos Pena recorded a 12-over 84 on Tuesday and tied for 76th at 35-over 251 (82-85-84).
The Colonials have nearly a month layoff before competing at Old Dominion's Outer Banks Intercollegiate at Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powells Point, N.C., on Oct. 20-22.
GW golf will host the Buff and Blue Alumni Matches at The Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville, Md., this weekend as part of GW's 2013 Alumni Weekend festivities.
