POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Competing in just his third collegiate golf tournament, freshman Jack Persons leads the George Washington men’s golf team with a 4-under par score of 68 at the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate at Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powells Point, N.C.

The Colonials are tied for fifth as a team with Winthrop with a combined score of 3-over 291. Last season’s NCAA national runners-up Georgia sit in first after shooting a 17-under 271.

“I am so proud of how Jack finished today,” head coach Terry Shaffer said. “He came through in the clutch and really helped his team out.”

Four of the teams competing at the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate are ranked in the top-100 men’s college teams, according to Golf Week rankings. Georgia (No. 28), Liberty (No. 32) and Maryland (No. 85) hold spots one through three, respectively, while GW is tied with the No. 100 team in Winthrop.

“This was a good first round for us,” Shaffer said. “If we keep shooting this way we will really show everyone what we can do.”

Persons fired an impressive 4-under 68, and senior Martin Liu is three-strokes behind with a 1-over 73 and is tied for 27th place individually. Seniors Andres Pumariega and Brandin Rukin are tied for 42nd with a 3-over 75. Classmate Taylor Fuqua shot a 5-over 77 to tie for 62nd place.

The Colonials return to Kilmarlic Golf Club on Monday morning. Tee off is set for 10 a.m.
