Piela's Third Top 20 Paces GW Golf at ECU Pirate Intercollegiate
Sophomore Piela Finishes T-20th With Final Round 76

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Four GW golfers recorded rounds of 5-over-par 76 on Tuesday morning to pace the Colonials on the final day of East Carolina's 54-hole Pirate Intercollegiate at Greenville Country Club's Brook Valley Course.
Senior Graham Lawyer, junior Jack Persons, sophomore Steve Piela and freshman Michael Heda each fired 76s on Tuesday as GW finished in eighth place in the nine-team field at 82-over 934 (318-307-309).
Presbyterian held onto its Monday lead to claim the tournament title at 33-over 885, edging runner-up Towson by five shots on the par-71, 6,656-yard Brook Valley course. ECU's Eric Brady took home medalist honors at 2-over 215 (72-72-71).
Piela, who competed as an individual at the event, was the Colonials' top finisher as he tied for 20th out of 55 golfers at 13-over 226 (76-74-76). It's the third career top-20 showing for Piela, who posted a pair of top 20s as a rookie in 2012-13. Piela tied for second in the field with 37 pars and tied for sixth in par-4 scoring at 7-over (4.21).
Senior Benton Kircher also competed as an individual and closed with a 6-over 77 to finish 34th at 20-over 233 (76-80-77).
Sophomore Michael Helton led GW's five-man team in a tie for 23rd at 15-over 228 (72-75-81). Heda finished alone in 38th place at 22-over 235 (81-78-76), while Persons was a shot behind at 23-over 236 (84-76-76) and finished in a tie for 39th. Lawyer placed 45th at 28-over 241 (83-82-76) and freshman Lucas Farmer tied for 46th at 29-over 242 (82-78-82).
GW heads south and closes out the fall 2013 season at the three-day, 54-hole Wendy's Kiawah Classic on the Jack Nicklaus-designed Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C., on Nov. 3-5.
