KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Senior Andres Pumariega fired a 1-under-par 71 in the second round of the Kiawah Classic on Monday to remain in second place with a two-round total of 3-under 141.  Pumariega is just one stroke behind tournament leader Jacobo Pastor of Charleston Southern heading into Tuesday’s final round.

The Miami, Fla., native shot his second consecutive under-par round to lead the George Washington men’s golf team at the par-72 Turtle Point Golf Course on Kiawah Island, S.C. Pumariega is second out of 105 golfers, while GW sits in fifth place in the 21-team pack with a two-round score of 13-over 602. Campbell leads all teams with a 4-over 584.

“This is a great field of competitors and we are showing what we can do,” said head coach Terry Shaffer (’79). “I believe Andres has a good chance to win it all tomorrow if he plays like I know he can.”

The Colonials are joined by 21 teams from 13 different NCAA conferences on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course that will play host to the 2012 PGA Championship.

Freshman Jack Persons, who was tied with Pumariega after round one, shot a 4-over 76 on Monday and is currently tied for ninth place with a two-round total of 2-over 146. Freshman Jonathan Dresnick moved up two spots and is tied for 71st at 15-over 159 after shooting a 5-over 77 on Monday.

Senior Taylor Fuqua shot a 9-over 81 in round two and owns a 16-over 160 through two rounds to tie for 74th. Classmate Martin Liu improved six places to tie for 79th at 17-over 161 after shooting a 5-over 77 on Monday.

“Everyone really plugged away today and no one gave up,” said Coach Shaffer. “The last couple of holes got to us, but I’m happy with the effort.”
