GW Golf Completes Day 1 at Wendy's Kiawah Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Freshman Lucas Farmer's 4-over-par 76 led GW golf in the opening round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Course on Sunday.

Farmer carded three birdies during his round of 76, highlighted by impressive birdies on Nos. 3 and 8, and is tied for 44th place in the 96-player field. He was one of six players to birdie the par-3, 211-yard third hole, and one of seven to birdie the par-4, 468-yard eighth.

GW is in 18th out of 18 teams at 33-over 321 on the par-72, 7,061-yard Turtle Point Golf Course. Defending champion South Carolina was the only team under par and holds an eight-shot lead at 5-under 283. The Gamecocks' Will Starke is tied with Radford's Nick Brediger for the individual lead at 3-under 69.

Freshman Michael Heda joined Farmer in the 70s with a 7-over 79 and is tied for 69th place. Sophomore Steve Piela is tied for 87th after a 10-over 82, junior Jack Persons is tied for 92nd at 12-over 84, and sophomore Michael Helton is in 96th at 14-over 86.

GW will continue play at the three-day, 54-hole Kiawah Classic on Monday morning.
