GW Golf Invitational Set for Friday-Saturday, Mar. 20-21

March 19, 2009

BETHANY BEACH, DE -- The 11th annual George Washington Golf Invitational, hosted by The George Washington University, will be held Friday-Saturday, March 20-21, at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Bethany Beach, DE. Bear Trap Dunes is a par-72, 6,834-yard course. The tournament will host several of the northeast's top teams and several teams from this event aim to qualify for the NCAA Regionals in 2009 either as conference champions or as at-large selections.

The event will be contested over 54 holes with 36 holes played Friday and 18 holes played Saturday on the Grizzly and Kodiak nines. The GW Invitational had been held at Swan Point Golf Club in Issue, MD, for seven straight years before moving to Bear Trap Dunes on the Delaware Shore three years ago.

Previous winners of the tournament returning to compete this year are the host Colonials of George Washington (2004) and Penn (2006, `07). The Quakers are coached by GW alumnus and former GW golf coach, Scott Allen ('94). Seven of GW's top 10 finishers will return as the Colonials will be fielding two teams in the event as will the U.S. Naval Academy.

Four teams that have participated in recent NCAA tournaments highlight the field. The host Colonials of George Washington earned an NCAA bid in 2006 after winning the event in 2004. Rhode Island, Penn and Bucknell all have qualified for the NCAA Regionals within the last two years.

Last year's event was won by Maryland which defeated GW's A team by 10 strokes. Originally scheduled as a 54-hole event, the 2008 tournament was shortened to 45 holes due to darkness. Skidmore's Chris DeJohn tied for runner-up by one stroke among individuals last year. Penn and Navy tied for third place, each carding 749s while Bucknell was fifth with a 758, two strokes ahead of GW's `B' Team at 760.

Spectators are welcome. Visit the Bear Trap Dunes pro shop for a tournament package with rosters and pairings. Contact GW head coach Terry Shaffer (202-994-5969) for more information or visit: www.beartrapdunes.com.
