GW Golf Invitational Set for March 24-25
March 23, 2007 BETHANY BEACH, DE -- The ninth annual George Washington Golf Invitational, hosted by The George Washington University, will be held Saturday-Sunday, March 24-25, at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Bethany Beach, DE. Bear Trap Dunes is a par-72, 6,834-yard course. The tournament will host several of the top teams in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions who are battling for a limited number of NCAA Tournament at-large bids. The Mid-Atlantic Region, of which GW is a member, receives four NCAA bids and the New England Region receives three bids. The event will be contested over 36 holes with 18 holes played each day. The GW Invitational had been held at Swan Point Golf Club in Issue, MD, for seven straight years before moving to Bear Trap Dunes on the Delaware Shore last year. Saturday's round gets underway with 8:00 a.m. off of the front Nine at Bear Trap Dunes. Previous winners of the tournament returning to compete this year are Iona (2000), Yale (2002), GW (2004) and Penn (2006). Seton Hall's Kyle Morris will return to defend his title and 6th-place finisher Joe McLister of Delaware also will compete. The Colonials will be without freshman Tyler Wendelken due to a broken wrist. Wendelken had the team's lowest scoring average in the fall. GW also will be without senior Raman Luthra who needed 15 stitches to close a gash on his hand during the team's volunteer effort at Habitat for Humanity last week in New Orleans. Luthra has the most career starts of any Colonial and was the co-champion of the the 2005 GW Invitational. Three teams that have participated in recent NCAA tournaments highlight the field. The host Colonials of George Washington earned an NCAA bid in 2006 after winning the event in 2004. Iona returns after winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship in 2000, `01 and `03 and participated in the 2000, `01 and `03 NCAA Championships. Spectators are welcome.
