Golf's Brandon Rukin Wins A-10 Performer and Rookie of the Week Honors
March 23, 2009
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- George Washington freshman Brandon Rukin (Pepper Pike, OH/Orange H.S.) has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Performer and Rookie of the Week for men's golf, the league office announced Monday. Rukin had the highest finish of his brief collegiate career last weekend by shooting a two-over-par 146 (74-72) at the 11th Annual GW Golf Invitational. Rukin was just one stroke off the pace as he tied Rhode Island's Mark Stevens for second place in a field of 117 golfers in Bethany Beach, Del. It marked his second Top-5 finish in six events this season. The two-day, 36-hole event was played Friday and Saturday on the par-72, 6,843-yard Bear Trap Dunes Golf Course. Rukin parred 26 of the 36 holes and averaged 4.05 strokes (+1) on the par-four holes. He birdied four holes (two each day) to go with just six bogies on the weekend. His second-round 72 on Saturday was his single-round career low. Rukin's efforts helped the Colonials' `B' team to an 11th-place tie in the 22-team field with a 623 (323-300) total, one stroke behind 9th-place Villanova and Binghamton (622). His individual head-to-head record now stands at 251-227 (.525). The Colonials next compete in the Navy Spring Invitational on April 4-5 at Annapolis, Md. The 36-hole event takes place at the par-71, 6,528-yard Naval Academy Golf Course.
