Golf's Tim Johnson Wins A-10 Rookie of the Week
May. 2, 2005 WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington's Tim Johnson (Marblehead, MA/Gov. Dummer Academy) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for men's golf, the league office has announced. It marks the second A-10 Rookie honor for Johnson who also won the award earlier this season on March 28. Johnson won the rain-shortened URI Spring Invitational with a three-under-par 68 at the par-71, 6,830-yard Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth, RI, last weekend. Sunday's final round of the 36-hole tournament was cancelled due to unplayable conditions. For Johnson, a freshman from Marblehead, MA, it marked the first tournament victory of his collegiate career and first Top 10 finish. The victory was even more impressive considering that Johnson had to play through the worst conditions of the day in the late afternoon Saturday and came in at 3-under-par 68. Johnson shot 1-over on the front nine, but birdied the 10th to get back to even and then birdied his last three holes to go 4-under on the back nine. He defeated 62 other golfers in the 12-team field. Johnson's perfomance helped GW to a second-place finish just five strokes off the pace. Johnson's outing improved his season stroke average to 77.13, fifth-best on the team through 15 rounds. GW next competes in the 2005 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, May 6-9, at Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, RI.
