Golf Adds Andrew Gallo, Lee Hodder

Aug. 15, 2002

Washington, DC -- The George Washington University has received commitments from Andrew Gallo (Thornill, Ontario/The Crescent School) and Lee Hodder (Cumbria, England/Wirral Grammar School) to join the GW golf team in the fall of 2003, head golf coach Scott Allen has announced.

Gallo has an impressive resume with strong results in both the U.S. and Canada. Gallo is the No. 15-ranked recruit in Canada, according to the National Junior Golf Scoreboard. He qualified for the U.S. Junior in 2001 shooting 74-73. He won his first-round match before losing in the second round of match play. He placed second at the 2001 AJGA Canadian Junior at Deer Creek shooting 72-75-73, losing by just one shot. His resume includes appearances in the Orange Bowl Junior and the Optimist International Junior as well as several AJGA events. Gallo is believed to be the first Colonials recruit to have won a match at the U.S. Junior and his runner-up finish in an AJGA event is also the highest finish ever for a Colonials recruit in what is judged by many to be the premier junior golf tour. "

Gallo is a terrific student and has a very solid resume," said Allen. "He should be a great fit for us." Hodder also has compiled a strong international resume on two continents. His father lives Qatar and, therefore, he has played much of his tournament golf in the middle-east, where he has finished in the top 10 at the Qatar Amateur and finished as low amateur at the European Tour's Qatar Master's Pro-Am. Recently, Hodder shot 75-79 at the prestigious Luxembourg Amateur, one of the premier amateur events in all of Europe. Like recent graduate Thomas Blankvoort, Hodder wasn't on the recruiting radar screen of a lot of coaches. "Lee has a great golf swing and is very mature," said Allen, "I'm confident that other coaches are soon going to be wondering where Lee Hodder came from and why they didn't recruit him."

Allen expects all five of his incoming freshmen to challenge for starting spots in a line-up that returns three starters from the 2001-02 campaign. The Colonials open their fall season Sept. 7-8 at the U.S. Naval Academy Invitational.
