Sept. 22, 2008
PHILADELPHIA, PA -- GW freshman Martin Liu (Hong Kong) has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for men's golf, the league office announced Monday.
Appearing in his first collegiate event, Liu had an impressive day placing third overall, out of 53 individuals, by shooting 76-72 (148). He parred 23 holes in the event and averaged 3.17 stokes on the par-3 holes, tied for third-lowest in the field. The 36-hole tournament, hosted by The George Washington University, was held at the par-71, 6,480-yard Kings Creek C.C. in Rehoboth Beach, DE, on Monday, Sept. 15.
Liu's effort helped GW place second in the 10-team field, just 24 hours after the Colonials won the team title at the Navy Fall Invitational. Lui's 74.0 stroke average is third-best on the team after one event this season.
The Colonials are playing in the Adams Cup of Newport, hosted by the University of Rhode Island, Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 22-23, at Newport, RI. The 54-hole event is taking place at the par-72, 7,244-yard Newport National Golf Club.
