GW Golf Hosts Rehoboth Beach Fall Invit. Sept. 26
Sept. 26, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC -- The fifth annual Rehoboth Beach Fall Invitational, hosted by The George Washington University, will be held on Monday, September 26, at Kings Creek C.C. in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Kings Creek has hosted the 1996 ECAC Championship, the 2000 Delaware State Open, and the 2001 Williamson Cup on the par-72, 6,600-yard course. The event will be contested over 36 holes, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start and a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start.
GW is the two-time defending champions of the event after winning by one shot two years ago and by seven shots last year over Drexel which will be back again this year. Individually, GW senior Andrew Gallo is the 2003 champ and was third in 2004 and must be considered on of the players to beat. His Colonials teammate, Brian Carroll, was runner-up at Kings Creek in the spring of 2003.
Navy won the Spring, 2003 event at Kings Creek and was second in the 2003 Fall event, so the Midshipmen know the course well and have had success there. Navy went to the NCAA in 2001, 2002, and 2003 as Patriot League Champs.
Binghamton won the 2002 tournament followed by Navy, Iona (3rd) and GW in fourth place. The 2001 event was rained out and the 2000 event was won by Iona College with GW placing second ahead of the University of Maryland in third. This year's field includes three-time MAAC Champions, Iona College, which has three NCAA Tournament appearances.
GW is off to another strong start after tying for second at the 16-team Navy Fall Invitational Sept. 10-11. GW also hosts the Bethany Beach Spring Invitational April 1-2, 2006.
