WASHINGTON, DC - GW's Brian Carroll (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for men's golf, the league office has announced.
Carroll became the second Colonial to win a tournament this month when he fired a 70-77-147 to capture the Don Mershon Classic Monday at the par-72, 6,859-yard Indian Valley Country Club in Telford, PA, Oct. 14. Freshman Andrew Gallo won the Temple Owl Invitational Oct. 6. Carroll's performance helped lead GW to the team title with a 298-308-606, nine strokes ahead of host Lehigh. Colgate was third with a 616. It marked the first GW team victory since the 1999 St. Bonaventure Invitational.
Carroll became just the fifth Colonial to win an individual tournament title in the last nine years and the second this month.
Carroll joins an exclusive list of former Colonials who have won individual medalist honors during the last nine years: Ryan Day at Rehoboth Beach Invitational (Oct., 2000); Bryan Derdenger at Lehigh (Oct., 2000); Thomas Blankvoort twice (GW Invitational in April, 2001 and Rehoboth Beach Invitational in April, 2002) and Andrew Gallo (Temple Owl Invitational Oct. 6).
