NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – George Washington men’s golf freshman Jack Persons was tabbed both the Atlantic 10 Performer and Rookie of the Week Wednesday following his record-setting week and an impressive fourth-place finish at the challenging Old Dominion/Outerbanks Collegiate.

Persons earned the conference accolades after setting new GW men’s golf 36- and 54-hole scoring records earlier this week. His two-round total of 138 and three-round score of 207 topped Brian Carroll’s (’06) previous marks of 139 and 210, both set in 2005.

The last GW freshman to earn A-10 Performer of the Week honors was in 2009 when Brandon Rukin also earned both Performer and Rookie of the Week.

Persons paced the Colonials with a fourth-place finish out of 90 golfers at the par-72 Kilmarlic Golf Course in Powells Point, N.C.  His 9-under-par total of 207 trailed just two players from Georgia and another from Liberty, the 28th and 31st ranked teams in the nation, respectively, according to the latest GolfWeek rankings.   Persons also finished four spots ahead of Georgia’s Bryden Macpherson, who captured the 2011 British Amateur title.

As a team, GW finished fifth out of 18 teams with a three-round total of 11-over 875 - ahead of conference foes Richmond (T-11th) and Saint Joseph’s (17th).

GW returns to the links on Sunday, Oct. 30 at the three-day Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at the Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
