Nov. 8, 2013
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - GW freshman Lucas Farmer wrapped his first semester of collegiate golf as the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Friday. Farmer was the Colonials' top finisher and the A-10's top freshman at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic earlier this week.
Farmer was GW's most consistent player throughout the three-day, 54-hole Classic, opening with back-to-back rounds of 4-over-par 76 before closing with a 5-over 77 to tie for 48th place among 96 golfers at 13-over 229. Farmer made six birdies during the tournament, second on the team behind junior Jack Persons' 11 birdies.
The award is the first weekly honor of Farmer's career and caps a solid opening semester for the Highland, Md., native and DeMatha Catholic product. Farmer made a hole-in-one on the fifth hole of his college career to appear on Golfweek.com's By the Numbers feature en route to a tie for 20th at the season opening Adams Cup of Newport in September. He tied for the team lead this fall with three rounds of par-or-better and ranks second on the team with a 77.53 scoring average over five events and 15 rounds.
