Steve McCarthy joins the Colonials after spending the summer of 2017 working with the US Rowing Under-18 CanAmMex team, winning the 8+ and 2- at the CanAmMex Regatta. He spent the greater part of last year working with the Dartmouth Lightweights. At Dartmouth, McCarthy coached the 2v, 3v, and 4v eights to outplace their seeding at Eastern Sprints.

Before Dartmouth, he worked for the Three Rivers Rowing Association as both the head coach of the junior rowers and the head development coach, roles he had held since August 2014. His responsibilities included guiding athletes through the college searching and recruiting process, developing training programs, planning travel logistics and organizing equipment.

During this time, he also served as the high-performance coach for the Men's Junior National team from June 2012 through March 2016. While there, he coached the CanAmMex team to a win in the 8+ at the 2015 CanAmMex Regatta in Mexico City and, at Club Nationals in 2013 and 2014, led the high performance group to medal finishes in the Junior 8+ and Intermediate 8+.

McCarthy served as assistant coach at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, Virginia (2011-13) and, prior to that, was the US Rowing Junior National Development Team assistant coach in Pittsburgh (2009-10).

McCarthy graduated from Northeastern with a degree in political science with minors in history and business. He rowed in the first varsity throughout his four-year tenure
