GW Men's Rowing Opens Season at Pennsylvania Invitational
Varsity 8 Earns Victory Over Drexel; Freshmen 8 Picks Up Two Wins
March 30, 2014
PHILADELPHIA - The George Washington men's rowing team opened its 2014 spring schedule with a busy two days at the Pennsylvania Invitational on the Schuylkill River.
The Colonials opened their spring campaign on Friday with a trio of races against Northeastern in violent conditions on the Schuylkill.
"Friday's racing was crazy with an extremely strong headwind and very rough water," said Head Coach Mark Davis. "We are just happy that every boat made it back to the dock in one piece. The guys showed toughness throughout the day as it wasn't as much racing as it was surviving."
The No. 2-ranked Varsity 8 of Northeastern won over the Colonials by a margin of 15 seconds. The Huskies finished in 6:55.8, followed by the Colonials in 7:10.0.
Northeastern also recorded victories in the JV8 and the 3V8. In the JV8, Northeastern finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:58.1, followed by GW in 7:24.5.
GW's Freshmen 8 raced against the third and fourth varsity boats of Northeastern. The Colonials' rookies finished in 7:35.0, behind Northeastern's 3V8 (7:14.8) and 4V8 (7:29.7).
Conditions improved slightly on Saturday but the Colonials still battled heavy rains and wind throughout the day. The Varsity 8 picked up a victory over Drexel in the morning session as GW finished in 5:37.0, two seconds ahead of the Dragons (5:39.0).
The JV8 finished in the middle of two Drexel boats in the JV8 race. Drexel's 3V8 took first in 5:49.0 followed by GW just four-tenths of a second behind in second place (5:49.4). The Dragon's 3V followed in third in 6:27.8.
GW's Freshmen 8 picked up the first of two victories on the day in the morning race against Drexel. The Colonials defeated Drexel by open water, finishing in 6:06.2.
The afternoon session featured GW racing in a trio of races against Penn.
The Freshmen 8 continued its momentum from the morning session, finishing in 5:56.8 to defeat Penn's rookie boat. The Quakers followed in 6:09.1, ahead of GW's 2F8 (6:17.3). Penn picked up victories in both the JV8 and Varsity 8, claiming the McCausland Cup for the third season in a row.
