Varsity Men's Rowing No Match For Penn; Frosh Win

April 1, 2007

PHILADELPHIA, PA - In the second race of the spring season for #20 George Washington University, both the first and second varsity eights fell to #13 University of Pennsylvania. In both races, Penn crossed the line first, with the Colonials 3 seconds off the mark - approximately one boat length.

"We're in a tough league and we didn't come up here expecting to dominate one of the longtime powers in this sport [Penn]," said head coach Greg Myhr. "Though our results may not yet reflect it, this team is showing that it is willing to step up and do whatever it can to be competitive at this level. I said some tough things to them after last week's racing, and to their credit, they've shown great character in their response. Though Penn was faster today, this was a vastly improved performance from a week ago. Becoming competitive in this league is going to be a process, and we're going to have to take our lumps and keep pressing forward. Based on what I saw today, I'm excited about our team's ability to do that."

The freshman squad, also coming off losses last weekend, charged off the starting line in Philadelphia and never looked back. GW's first freshman eight won by 13 seconds, and the 2nd freshman eight raced as two fours, one winning by 22 seconds, the other 1 second behind Pennsylvania. "I couldn't be more thrilled, " said Myhr, for the freshman squad as well as for what it suggests for the future of GW Men's Rowing."

Next up for the Colonials: The 20th Annual GW Invitational Regatta on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7. GW will be racing Michigan, Cornell, Gonzaga, Temple, and Saint Joseph's, all in dual action.
