WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington men's and women's rowing teams amassed 142 points to win the Gilbert H. Hood, Jr. Point Trophy at the 20th Annual George Washington Invitational Regatta on a cold, blustery Saturday on the Potomac River.
It marked the first time the Colonials have won the point trophy. Cornell was the runner-up with 135 points followed by Georgetown with 105 points and Clemson with 89 points. GW, which has never won the team point title, had finished second in the final points standings on three separate occasions: in 2005, 2003 and in 1994.
Conditions on the 2,000-meter course included strong tailwinds with temperatures in the high 30s resulting in wind chill factors in the 20s.
Cornell's men tallied 135 points to win the Oliver T. Carr Bowl, awarded to the team with the highest men's point total while Clemson's women scored 89 total points to take home the Howard Wilkins Trophy awarded to the highest scoring women's team.
Points were awarded based on first- and second-place finishes with 15 points to first place in the first varsity races and 12 points to first place in the second varsity races. Novice race winners were awarded 10 points.
The next race for the GW men will be Saturday, April 28 against Virginia on the Potomac while the GW women's next race will be Sunday, April 15 vs. Georgetown in the Class of `98 Cup.
